I have participated as a juror twice now in the competition created together with the La Tela Nera website A pen for Poe , dedicated to the American writer. The first edition included a story inspired by his works, while the second was linked to detective stories and detective stories. Reading those stories I got a negative idea about the participants in literary competitions. A precise profile has emerged of the aspiring writer who sends his stories to literary competitions in the hope of emerging, of getting noticed, of adding a point to his CV. Most common errors in submitted stories Regulations : the participant does not read the regulations. The competition was for short stories and there were those who sent a novel.
A novel, you understand? The length was between 10,000 and 30,000 characters and some sent stories of 8,000 characters and those of 40,000. Writing : from the texts sent, it can be seen that the majority of participants do not Special Data have much experience in writing. The writings were full of punctuation errors, typos, grammatical errors, repetitions. It is clear that very few of the participants had others read their texts. Creativity : You don't need to be creative when submitting a story to a literary competition. Some included a cover, others laid out the text as if it were ready for publication, others used images to illustrate it. Theme : The theme of the contest also seems like something to gloss over. A mystery is a mystery and has precise characteristics. A detective story ditto.
A horror film doesn't fall into either genre. If you want to enter a crime fiction contest, you need to have read and written a lot of crime fiction. Otherwise there is no point in participating. Triviality : I agree that the competition was dedicated to Poe, but it seems excessive to me to mix all his works in a single story. Or even rewrite them. A reference to Poe's works is a hint or little more, not a retraction of his stories. How to submit a story to a literary competition Competition rules : if you want to have a minimal chance of winning a literary competition, then read its rules carefully and follow them scrupulously. If you have any doubts, write to the organizers. It seems banal, yet in a list of 27 stories there were 5-6 to be discarded just because of their length. That is almost 20%. Writing : a literary competition is not a writing gym, but an exam. It's called a competition for a specific reason. When you participate in a public competition, you study and prepare to take and pass it.
